TikTok: Growing Number of Governments Join Ban Wagon
Bans Across the Globe
TikTok, the widely popular video-sharing app, is facing increasing scrutiny from governments around the world. As of April 4, 2023, several nations have imposed bans on the platform, citing concerns over data security and its impact on social harmony.
In the United States, TikTok is currently facing an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission over potential violations of children's privacy. The app has also been banned from government-issued devices in several states, including Kansas and Tennessee.
International Backlash
The bans on TikTok are not limited to the United States. In November 2023, Nepal banned the app for allegedly disrupting social harmony. The BBC reported that the ban would take effect immediately.
TikTok is also unavailable in China, the country where the app was originally developed. This means that more than 3 billion people around the world are unable to access TikTok.
European Concerns
The European Parliament, European Commission, and the EU Council have all banned TikTok on staff devices. These bodies cited cybersecurity concerns and the app's potential use for espionage.
The growing number of bans on TikTok highlights the increasing scrutiny faced by social media platforms and their handling of user data. It remains to be seen whether other governments will follow suit and further restrict the app's global reach.
