Gasly Facing Azerbaijan GP Qualifying Disqualification
Red Bull's Sergio Perez took pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Qualifying was red-flagged twice, with the second stoppage caused by a crash for AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly
Sergio Perez took a surprise pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as qualifying was overshadowed by a huge crash for Pierre Gasly.
The Mexican driver, who had never previously started a race higher than third, edged out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and world champion Max Verstappen in a dramatic session in Baku.
Qualifying was red-flagged twice, with the second stoppage caused by a crash for AlphaTauri's Gasly at Turn 3.
The Frenchman lost control of his car under braking and slammed into the barriers, with the impact breaking his suspension and causing significant damage to his AlphaTauri.
Gasly was able to climb out of his car and walk away from the crash, but he is now facing a potential disqualification from qualifying for impeding other drivers during the red flag period.
The stewards are investigating the incident and will make a decision on Gasly's fate later this evening.
If Gasly is disqualified, it would promote Fernando Alonso to 10th place on the grid, with the Alpine driver having originally qualified in 11th.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 12.
